THE FACTS about Howrey Bootcamp®

1) What is Howrey Bootcamp?

Far more intense and rewarding than traditional summer associate programs, Howrey Bootcamp is an entirely unique approach to associate recruitment and training. Howrey Bootcamp presents an exciting opportunity for law students to challenge themselves while learning about our culture, clients, and practice in an intensive format. Rather than taxing summer associates with months of legal research memos, obligatory events, and minimal partner contact, Bootcamp teams outstanding law students with some of the most experienced litigators in the country in a hands-on, advocacy skills training program, which is preceded by working in one of Howrey's US offices.

2) With Bootcamp's emphasis on trial work, does this mean Howrey's interested only in students who want to become litigators?

Howrey LLP practices all aspects of antitrust law, intellectual property law, and complex global litigation. Although we're certainly interested in candidates with a passion for litigation, Howrey Bootcamp® is designed to assess and enhance participants' overall oral and written advocacy skills - skills that are important for an attorney in any of our areas of practice.

3) When is Howrey Bootcamp and where will I stay?

This year applicants have two options: a 6-week program (May 16 - June 24) or 10-week program (May 16 - July 22). During the trial portion (June 12-24) participants live at an off-site conference center in the Washington DC area, where they're provided with a guest room, all meals and access to an athletic center.

4) What are the application requirements?

Students who are interviewed by our attorneys should submit a resume, transcript and writing sample and complete a Bootcamp application form.

Students who do not get a chance to interview with one of our attorneys should complete the online application and submit a resume, transcript, writing sample and a 100-word personal statement written by and about themselves. This is your chance to let us know something about you that we wouldn't find on your resume.

5) How is the Summer Program structured?

Candidates may choose one of two options. The first option starts with four weeks in the office followed by our two-week Bootcamp trial, for a total of six weeks at Howrey. The second option allows applicants to return for an additional four weeks in the office after Bootcamp, for a total of ten weeks at Howrey. With either option, participants will get the intensive Bootcamp experience that promotes team-building among the participants, and actually increases the quantity and quality of contact with the firm's partners, associates and staff. Giving two options allows participants to spend an additional four weeks at Howrey or split their summer with another firm. Learn more about Bootcamp directly from those who have been through it.

6) What compensation do candidates receive?

Candidates receive a weekly salary of $2,400.

7) Will there be some social activities and fun events?

Of course! The Bootcamp program includes plenty of opportunities for candidates and attorneys to interact informally, including lunches, sporting events, sightseeing excursions and evenings out.

8) Is the in-office portion really enough to decide whether I want to join the firm if I choose the 6-week summer program option?

At Bootcamp, candidates interact extensively with many of the lawyers from all of Howrey's offices, as well as with their fellow candidates at the other offices. We've found this is more than sufficient for a candidate to get a feel for the atmosphere and dynamics of the office. Also, each year attorneys participate as lecturers, coaches, critiquers, judges, and witnesses in the two-week trial program. You'll interact with people in a much more intimate setting than a happy hour could possibly provide.

9) Do candidates handle any actual client work?

We do have candidates perform client work (including pro bono projects) during the in-office program. During the Bootcamp, candidates focus exclusively on seminars, workshops, and mock trial preparations.

10) What's a typical day at Howrey Bootcamp like?

A typical day is a learning experience: busy, educational and fun. Check out last year's schedule.

11) Do Bootcamp's simulated trials give candidates a realistic view of associate life?

Yes. Bootcamp's model cases are designed to mirror the types of issues and projects handled by Howrey associates on actual client cases. The curriculum's focus is on the advocacy skills needed for long-term success at the firm, rather than on the mundane research memos traditionally assigned to summer associates. In addition, Howrey candidates have many opportunities to talk with our associates about their own experiences.

12) Isn't Howrey concerned that candidates will be attracted to other firms with more traditional summer programs?

We genuinely encourage candidates to experience other firms' programs. We welcome the contrast between the Bootcamp experience and that of a traditional summer program. We believe the contrast allows candidates a broader range of options, while providing us the opportunity to select those students who fit best with our mission and vision. Should a Bootcamp candidate decide another firm would be a better fit, we prefer that he or she make that decision at the end of the summer rather than a year or two down the road.

13) Should I take evidence or trial advocacy courses before I go to Bootcamp?

Although an introductory evidence or trial advocacy course would make some exercises more accessible, these courses aren't prerequisites to attending the program. We provide a background in the evidence and trial techniques necessary to succeed at Bootcamp.

14) How does Bootcamp differ from a trial advocacy class?

Howrey Bootcamp uses the project-based "learn by doing" approach increasingly used in trial advocacy courses taught at law schools and training firms. However, unlike courses taught by one or two professors, Bootcamp candidates are challenged both by dozens of experienced trial lawyers who do this work everyday, and by their peers, who are top law students from across the country. Our candidates get immediate, substantive feedback from our lawyers and trial judges. And, unlike courses taught by private training firms, Bootcamp candidates learn from the same lawyers they'll work with day in and day out if they join Howrey. The curricular scope at Bootcamp is also considerably broader than most trial advocacy courses, which typically don't include depositions, pleadings and written discovery, or client interviews. Finally, and most importantly, Bootcamp offers a completely unique opportunity for students to define a successful trajectory for their lives and careers for years to come.

15) Does the firm limit the number of associate offers extended to Bootcamp candidates after the conclusion of the summer program?

No, we don't limit the number. To ensure the best possible experience for our summer associates, we aim for a specific number of participants on each trial team. This means we have a precise, predetermined number of openings in our summer program. The result is a smaller class and the opportunity to focus on each individual summer associate. The firm extends offers to every candidate whose performance demonstrates a likelihood of long-term success at Howrey.

16) What is the First Tier Program?

The First Tier program is designed for young lawyers entering the practice of law at Howrey. The two-year program positions incoming associates for success through a comprehensive learning curriculum that focuses on training, investment and action learning, practical application and client interaction. First Tier associates have dramatically reduced client billable expectations in order to accommodate the training and professional development components of the program. Upon completing the program -- one that includes assignment to trial teams, client secondments, opportunities for publication, and hands-on management of multiple smaller cases -- Howrey associates will possess skills valued by our clients and essential to a successful legal career over the long term.
